My Sony DSC-HX9V flash does not pop-up !!!

My compact camera is a Sony DSC-HX9V. Amazing compact with a big 16x optical zoom lens. Today I needed to use it and wanted my pop-up flash to work (usually I don't use the flash).

But, to my surprise, it was not popping-up. To solve this, I had to put in manual mode, set the flash to "always" and while pressing the shutter, I used my nail and gently pull out the flash. It worked !!! From now on, I will at least turn it on once a day (ok... maybe not once a day... but once a week...)

Cheers !

How can Sony sell a camera with a fault so many people report after a few weeks.

  3. I was ready to shoot this [darned] thing. Then, this post gave a stay of execution to my camera. This Sony DSC-HX9V takes good pictures and very good video. HOWEVER, this pop-up flash is the bane of its versatility. Sometimes, the flash will not retract; sometimes, it will not pop-up.

  6. Worked for me! Thanks!! Used tip of paring knife in crack/joint of flash being careful not to scratch. Didn't work at first but used just a tad more gentle force and it popped up. Seems not to re-occur so long as I don't push the flash down manually (just let it retract when you turn cam off)

  8. I had to pry hard with tip of knife from the back edge. Left a dent in the plastic but the flash now goes up and down.

  9. Worked for me too. Now the flash comes up as expected. I used a steak knife, instead of my finger. As long as I keep my finger off the flash (lousy design), the flash now pops up/down normally.

  10. The gap between the flash the camera body is incredibly narrow -- took me about 5 minutes to get my fingernail under the edge of the flash (toward the center of the camera). Then I followed the suggestions here: put the camera on manual, with flash always on -- and tried taking pictures while pulling up gently with my nail. The flash grudgingly came up, a little bit at a time while I snapped 3 pictures -- then it was up all the way and flashing. I took a few more flash pictures, then turned the camera off. The flash retracted, and then popped up again properly when I turned it back on and took the next picture. Seems fine now. Thanks SO much! Aside from the position of the flash and it's obvious vulnerability to being blocked as it rises, this camera is amazing. So glad it's working again. Thank you!

  12. Great stuff ... I thought I was into a expensive repair. A simple thumb nail - in my case a thin knife edge. Thanks for the heads up!!

  14. Thankyou This Worked for me as well. I used a steak knife.

I just left it on auto plus.. forced the flash up. made sure it was dark enough for the flash to activate and took the perfect picture it always does.. then the turned off. back on flash works as before.

Yes lousy place. I have to remind everyone when taking pictures. but.. this camera. and I went through many many cameras is the best for clubbing and general pictures. iv also got its baby sister very similar less zoom but just as good. though the flash is a feature on the front much better only occasionaly block it. The perfect picture only a slight delay letting the focus do its thing. Iv taken 1000's of pictures. Very happy x

  15. Thank you!

This worked for me as well. I used my trusty Swiss Army Executive knife (IMHO the most versatile and best sized SA knife) to gently, but firmly, lift the edge of the flash when the shutter is pressed and infrared focus light is on. As suggested earlier, it does take a bit of effort, but it works in the end. The flash pops up and retracts as it is supposed to.

Thanks again. Ain't Google - and GoDiversity (!) grand!
